Why I Founded Daily Edition

Dashboards upon dashboards.

After leaving university, I was fortunate enough to be starting my career at a very interesting time in the history of information technology. The data available for driving business decisions was starting to explode after the dust had settled from the dotcom boom of the late 90’s. The launch of AWS was less than 2 years away and the concept of SaaS had only just emerged. Operational reporting was transitioning from manual historical reporting to high volume machine data streaming over the wire in real time.

The terminology and jargon was changing too. Conversations about Relational Databases became Data Marts, then Data Warehouses and eventually Data Lakes. Each iteration was an addition to the conversation instead of a replacement.

After I transitioned to working in sales as both an engineer and later an account manager, it was always exciting when users found value in the dashboards our solutions provided. However, I was often perplexed when we would have conversations with the folks higher up in a customer's leadership, the decision makers, and they would ask us:

“These Dashboards are cool, my teams really like them, but can I just get a high level summary on the overall status of my business? Can you just have your system send me a daily or weekly or monthly report on our overall trends?”

Wait. What?!?

Despite all the investment in tools and processes, it seemed most leaders were still struggling to cut through all the noise to make the strategic decisions that impacted their business. Nearly all of them had teams of employees manually reconciling data across multiple systems. Those people would often need to spend days and sometimes weeks putting together reports that provided the high level numbers and trends along with the context or narrative around those numbers.

So here we are, nearly 20 years later. I’ve helped to build and worked to sell a variety of tools across the industry. Today, there are more solutions for information processing, reporting and analysis than ever before. We have mountains of tools and even bigger mountains of data. However, it seems that many executives are still struggling to get the simple, straightforward answers on the state of their business in a timely manner. Instead, we often end up with yet another dashboard, dashboards upon dashboards. And don’t get me wrong here, I’m not against dashboards. But after 20 years watching this situation and witnessing very little actual change, I couldn’t help but think, “there’s got to be a better way” to get critical information to the people who need it to make decisions.

Now we're entering a new era

Until recently the technology didn’t really exist to automatically provide the added context executives need to make strategic decisions. It’s been up to teams of human analysts to add the context, if there is enough time of course and it’s a high enough priority.

In the past few years, however, new technology has emerged to enable flexible and fluent natural language generation. That means not just surfacing and visualizing the numbers, but actually being able to interpret them and provide a narrative on their trends and correlations, in an easy to read format.

That’s why my co-founder John and I quit our jobs and set out to build DailyEdition. Because we heard you, reporting is a pain and often a time consuming distraction. Generative AI technology has finally evolved enough for us to harness this technology, lean on our analytics backgrounds and build a solution to provide the analysis and insights with context, delivered automatically.

We’re here to make the lives of Leadership, Analysts, SalesOps, Marketing and RevOps much easier, as well as the lives of all the people that they support.

What does the future hold?

We look forward to working with you, and together taking the next step in making context driven information far easier to consume and act on.
